Voyeur in a Highrise

a poem about apartment living and people watching

sudoku grid of apartments
concrete and steel joins living rooms
eighty-one doors of old men gray
.
each box streaming reality
TV in ultra clear HD
for channel hops and binge watchers
.
watching from a distance of less
prestigious dwellings, I’m ready
for tonight’s night-watch and capers
.
a man of less than the average
head of hair, is pulling at child
Spitting from fifth floor balcony
.
at street level a hand is held
open palmed, as if to catch rain
after drops had hit the forehead
.
cross-legged on the sofa smoking
the older single woman puffs
left hand searching for the remote
.
passing the empty or blinds closed
move swiftly to books laying on
teen with a body of armor
.
small dog bites leather slippers
wets orchid pot in place of tree
barks at no one particular
.
headphones clamped to bottle blond hair
does a ‘nobody can see me’
jig, and prepares for office work
.
someone’s writing with back to me
looks headless from this vantage point
realistic enough to scare
.
businessman folds sock and ties
likely origami master
and dons red braces pulled too tight
.
is anyone watching me too
sipping green sludge for my beauty
tapping password into PC
.
